Coral, Peach + Pink Lake Union Yacht Club Wedding

We had the pleasure of both designing and coordinating Edwina and Jesse’s Lake Union Yacht Club wedding. Edwina wore her mother’s 1960’s wedding dress so I designed a modern version of the traditional cascade bouquet with amazingly fragrant local garden roses and sweet peas with the vintage dress in mind.  It was a truly beautiful summer day in Seattle – still 75 degrees when the newlyweds sailed away at twilight on a 40 foot yacht. The gorgeous cake was by Honeycrumb Cake Studio, the whimsical calligraphy was by Iwona Konarski, and these lovely images are courtesy of The Popes.

The gorgeous images by The O’Malleys of a Medina backyard birthday party we designed and styled were recently published on 100 Layer Cake and I’m finally getting around to sharing the details…

My friend Sally of La Happy loves all things pink and so that was a good starting point for the event design. Her idea to add a modern black and white runner was a great way to add contrast to what could otherwise have been over-the-top girly. We wanted the evening to be fun and low-key but also styled to coordinate with her gorgeous hand lettered invitation.

To fill out the long table, I chose to create a single large focal arrangement and several smaller bud vase style pieces with a slightly larger grouping of blush and rose pink garden roses at one end to add visual interest and some whimsy. I used garden roses and cafe au lait dahlias as the main components in the gold urn centerpiece with gorgeous peachy-blush garden spray roses and accents of pieris and berries. I used fresh hops to provide a gorgeous scent as well as movement to the arrangement.

We contrasted a mix of more traditional brass candlesticks with bright pink and blush taper candles and intermixed clear glass ghost tapers for a modern twist. We layered the black and white striped runner over a polka dot lace and mixed and matched different shades of pink napkins. Gold flatware and gold rimmed plates and glassware from AA Party Rentals added polish to the look.

Using an iron-on transfer, Sally hand lettered the guests’ names making the napkin both a personalized favor and a place card. We displayed the table numbers in gold flower frogs accented with a sweet pink rose.

Friday Florals

The downside to working with flower frogs is that things tend to move around in transport. The upside is that sometimes when you remake them, you like the second version more than the original. I made this arrangement for a styled lingerie shoot yesterday and when I pulled it out of the truck late last night, it had sadly fallen victim to both the hot studio lights and Seattle’s notorious potholes. I tossed in a few leftover stems this morning while waiting for my kettle to boil and turns out that I think I like this version better than the original…

finch and thistle, seattle event designer, floral design, blush, goldNikki was a dream bride to work with on the design of her August wedding at Everett Golf and Country Club. From the very beginning, we were on exactly the same page with the design style she requested: an elegant ballroom style wedding in blush, peach and gold with whimsical, Anthropologie inspired touches.

They say that planning a wedding takes a village (don’t they?) and this was no exception. The team that Nikki and I assembled to pull this off was some of the best of the best. Courtney Bowlden is responsible for all the beautiful photography, J + B Video produced a fabulous wedding video, and Judy Tallant at Tallant House worked with me to design the dessert table. The linens are La Tavola, the vintage pieces came from Vintage Ambiance, the favors are Theo Chocolates and the gorgeous programs and calligraphy are La Happy.

A woman down due to illness, terrible game day traffic, unexpected hot weather and floating flower mechanics made the setup on this a little more hectic than I had anticipated and still we got everything done with time to spare and calm demeanors all around.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of attending a workshop run by Kate Holt of Flowerwild on location in Calistoga, California. I posted a few of my own pictures in an earlier post and have been waiting ever since with bated breath for the real pictures shot by the incomparable Jose Villa. Since today those images have been published on Style Me Pretty, I’m delighted to share them here! jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding

I can’t say enough how wonderful this workshop was for me. Notwithstanding the chance to work with two wedding professionals at the peak of their careers, it was an amazing opportunity to meet/commiserate/support/bond/laugh with other designers from all over the country (and Ireland!) We have all since kept in touch, offering each other insider advice, referrals, sources and floral secrets. As someone who works primarily alone, having floral designer friends all over the country who are happy to be open and honest with opinions about pricing, techniques etc has been life-changing. I cannot stress enough how nice it is to feel part of a community of such kind and creative women.

jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country weddingThe shoot culminated in a styled inspiration shoot shot on location at Mayacamas Ranch by Jose Villa. We each got to have our work photographed by Jose and watch Kate work her magic as she styled each shot. It was also wonderful to work with some California wedding pros that I knew only by reputation and through social media. The fabulous team of professionals included Mar of Team Hair and Makeup, stationery/calligraphy by Feast Calligraphy, and prop rentals from Found Vintage Rentalsjose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding jose villa, flowerwild, calistoga, wine country wedding

Nikki + Kevin’s Wedding Video

Kevin & Nikki from J&B on Vimeo.

I’ve never shared a video on the blog before but I think this one from Janelle and Blake Abel is so fabulous and shows so many of the details from Nikki and Kevin’s August wedding at the Everett Golf and Country Club, that I can’t wait to share it now with more details to come soon… Enjoy!

fall is here

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been waking up to the sound of the fog horns echoing in the distance and a serious chill in the air. Summer in the Northwest is no doubt a magical season but for all the wedding folks, Autumn heralds the end of our wedding season and for a few short weeks, a well deserved rest. Since our last wedding a week ago, I have been cleaning up the studio, meeting with 2014 clients, planning for upcoming commercial shoots, bugging all my photographer friends for wedding images, and catching up with the friends I barely saw in the craziness of the last few months. On Monday, photographer Stephanie Cristalli and I took off for the country to visit my very first pumpkin patch (at age 31 no less) to pick out some heirloom pumpkins and make some pretty pictures.Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch stephanie cristalli Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch Finch & Thistle fall bridal bouquet pumpkin patch stephanie cristalli

Published: Adventurous Engagement on GWS

When my friend Ryan Flynn told me he was planning something pretty special for the engagement shoot of Emilee and Taylor, I was more than happy to lend a hand with a seasonal bouquet of hellebore and lilacs for Emilee and a gilded headband. I am blown away by the creativity of this couple (Emilee’s outfit changes are one example) and Ryan in picking the most amazing locations for this Eastern WA film shoot. You can see more images and costume changes on Green Wedding Shoes…
